Yamandu Costa, considered a global reference and one of the biggest talents of the seven-string guitar, unfolds his musical creativity freely with an absolutely perfect technique.
He renovates old pieces and presents brilliant compositions (bringing together rhythms that include bossa nova, choro, milonga, chamamé and tango) with renditions that are always impassioned and contagious and reveal a perfect understanding of his instrument. The Brazilian guitarist and composer, with a borderless musical language, has performed at the world’s most important venues and festivals, alone and with renowned artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Richard Galliano, Toquinho, Pepe Romero, Ney Matogrosso, Marisa Monte, Carlos Nuñez, Alfredo Rodríguez, Stefano Bollani and Shelly Berg, amongst many others.
In 2021 he received, together with Toquinho, the 2021 Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album for Live at Rio Montreux Jazz Festival.
Talking about the seven-string guitar, he says that it “is a curious instrument: it was taken from Russia to Brazil by Russian gypsies, and was incorporated to the Brazilian tradition, to genres and languages such as samba. This additional string, which is low, gives you a bigger range of sounds; it’s like an extended guitar.”
