Maurice Ravel finished composing the Concerto in G in the autumn of 1931. It was premiered on the 14th of January 1932 at the Salle Pleyel in Paris with Marguerite Long at the piano and the composer conducting the Lamoureux Orchestra. Inspired by Mozart’s formal diaphanous ideas and sifted through Saint-Saëns’ rich technique, it has an elegant central nocturne that recalls the best spirit of his master Gabriel Fauré.
With the subtitle "Episode of the life of an artist", Hector Berlioz’ Fantastic Symphony is a paradigmatic example of music that is both psychological and descriptive. The composer brings to his pentagrams the emotions provoked by the dramatic talent of the Irish actress Harriet Smithson, his future wife, interpreting the role of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet.
