"All "classics" evolve daily, offering different facets in accordance with the changes of humanity. What does this "drama of women in the villages of Spain" tell present-day audiences ? It focuses on the position of women in society, which its glass ceilings, their salary differences and physical defencelessness against violence, irrespective of its origin.
Without realizing or realizing too much, Bernarda represents authority, management of economic power, the established order. The story of Bernarda and her daughters has deep, twisted roots with a faraway origin, perpetrated by who knows what obscure interests. An ancestral origin based on fear. Bernarda fears that everything could change, and that that change would cause her to lose her apparent and imposed entity; she fears not knowing what to do with an authentic vital essence which could throw her off balance. This is why she strictly maintains the rules with which she was brought up. Can our ancestors continue at present to devour us?"  José Carlos Plaza
