This version of The House of Ulloa, on occasion of the centenary of Emilia Pardo Bazán’s death, is an accusation against violence and cruelty, focusing on the confrontation between desire, passion and love, the rural violence of local tyrants and courtesy and good manners of the city (Santiago de Compostela). The main characters are a local tyrant, a priest with contained passions (like the famous ‘Thorn Birds’), a woman in love, a barbarian foreman, a young gentleman from Santiago, a sensual servant… Bazan’s priest in love coincides with Clarin’s in his famous novel The Regent, both of a naturalist style, which came from France and greatly marked late 19th century literature with the characters’ biological and social determinism. Fermín de Pas, in Clarin’s novel, and Julian, in Pardo Bazán’s are two very different priests: the former is corrupt and sure of himself; the latter is insecure, fearful and generous.
