Nerja is Rafael Riqueni’s new work, which unfolds like a children’s story that tells how, following a fortuitous event, a group of adolescents discovered in 1959 the monumental cave of the town of Nerja in the province of Malaga. Riqueni interprets what happened that night from a fascinating harmonic concept with which he expands the currents of musical impressionism in direct conjunction with elements typical of flamenco.

Rafael Riqueni (Seville, 1962) is one of the greatest maestros in the history of flamenco guitar. At the age of fourteen he won two of Spain’s most important guitar awards: the Ramón Montoya Concert Guitar award at the 8th Competition of Cordoba, and first prize at the 6th National Competition of Jerez. Since then, he has published one of the most celebrated collection of records in the history of flamenco and Spanish music.
Following Suite Sevilla (1993) and Parque de María Luisa (2017), he completed his trilogy of Andalusian contemporary music with Nerja, performed for the first time with great success at the 5th Flamenco Art Biennial of Paris.
His most recent awards include the 2020 Giraldillo Ciudad de Sevilla at the Flamenco Biennial and the Guitarra con Alma at the Festival of Jerez. His album Herencia was nominated to the 2021 Grammy Awards for Best Flamenco Record.
