Andreu, a cultivated; sarcastic and stubborn 66 year old man, is losing his memory, although he refuses to have any help and rejects all the caretakers hired by his daughter Anna. As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, Andres begins to have doubts about his loved ones, his mind and even of his own experience of reality.
El padre is one of the most famous plays of recent years. Premiered in 2012 in Paris, the French newspaper Le Point described it as “magisterial” and the newspaper La Croix as “unforgettable”. Its debut in London in 2016, the plat was described by The Guardian as “the best play of the year” and The Times said it was “one of the best plays of this decade”.
This "tragic farce", as it is called by the author, has won numerous awards for best show; including the Molière (París, 2014), the Lawrence Olivier (Londres, 2016) and the Tony and Drama League (Nueva York, 2016) awards. It has been performed in more than 50 countries, and its film version, directed by Florian Zeller with Anthony Hopkins as main character, won the Oscar for Best Male Performance and Best Adapted Script.
