Brahms finished his Concerto No.2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83 in 1881, more than twenty years after his first concerto for piano and orchestra. During that period of time he composed very important works of his catalogue, including the first two symphonies and the violin concerto. In his Concerto No.2, the soloist instrument acts as the orchestra’s driving element, and not as its opponent. This is due to the equivalent symphonic character Brahms assigned to the piano in respect to the instrumental formation, as a result of his personal style playing the piano and constantly using the whole keyboard. The result is a very original concertante composition, considered at the level of a symphony with piano obligato. Its structure in four movements gives it a unique dimension for a concertante work, which normally only have three movements.
Franz Schubert’s peculiar melodious style is reflected in his first six symphonies, composed when he was young, in which the brass section is at the core of the orchestration, with French horns and trumpets standing out along with the progressive addition of the trombones. The themes are usually borrowed, and are oriented to highlighting the canto above any other musical particularity. His Symphony No.3 in D Major, D 200, written in the spring of 1815 when he was still a music teacher at his father’s school, should be understood along this line.
